An historical event that few media covered: the Smithsonian’s Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C. soon will display one of the U.S. military's most durable combat aircraft from World War II — the Martin B-26B-25-MA Marauder "Flak-Bait,” notes Grumpy Editor.
A Stars and Stripes story points out the twin-engine medium bomber survived more than 200 missions over Europe, despite being riddled with more than 1,000 flak and shrapnel holes.
Instead of being scrapped after the war, the historic aircraft was donated to the Smithsonian.
While the nose section went on display, the rest of plane went into storage at a Maryland facility.
The aircraft is being pieced together at the Mary Baker Engen Restoration Hangar at the Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, Va.
When the work is completed, the bomber will be placed among the museum's other famous aircraft, including the space shuttle Discovery, an SR-71 Blackbird and the B-29 Enola Gay.
