The Los Angeles Times, which periodically trims its editorial staff, seeks “two energetic reporters” in a job openings pitch, but the positions have unusual requirements --- ability to be fluent in Vietnamese and Korean, notes Grumpy Editor.
These aren’t foreign correspondents’ jobs.
The aim, as The Times puts it, is “to cover the Vietnamese and Korean communities in California and elsewhere in the West.”
Applicants also must have five years of professional writing experience.
“We need people with an ability to break news and write original features,” says a Times editor. “Successful candidates will be able to capture the political, economic and cultural trends of these influential groups.”
The openings come at a time when other Times coverage, from beats to outlying communities, has been steadily reduced.
Also, Vietnamese and Koreans already have newspapers geared to their interests.
Two Korean daily newspapers service the Los Angeles area: Korea Central Daily and Korea Times, Los Angeles edition.
The weekly Saigon Times, based in nearby Rosemead, aims for Vietnamese readers.
