Leading Michigan’s Lake Superior State University’s banished words/phrases list for 2012 are “amazing” and “blowback,” notes Grumpy Editor.
Amazing received the most nominations. In keeping with the word’s definition --- overwhelming with surprise or sudden wonder --- LSSU wordsmiths said they were “surprised at the number of nominations” for the word and “surprised to find that it hadn’t been included on the list in the past.”
Blowback was cited as a growing term used by corporate folks in place of “reaction.”
Also getting a big play: Ginormous, meaning huge or extremely large, emerged via a combination of gigantic and enormous. (The new word has already made it into some dictionaries.)
Others on the banished list:
Baby bump
Shared sacrifice
Occupy
Man cave
The new normal
Pet parent
Win the future
Trickeration
Thank you in advance
