Is it news when Former President George W. Bush and his wife, Laura, quietly go to Fort Hood, Texas to visit soldiers wounded in a shooting rampage the day prior, asks Grumpy Editor.
Sure.
But the Friday night private visit, without fanfare, was overlooked by most editors putting out weekend editions.
It wasn’t entirely top secret. Fox News and ABC News mentioned the Bushes appearance at Fort Hood. Associated Press moved three short paragraphs.
The Bushes spent about two hours meeting and hugging the wounded, families and other soldiers.
They also thanked the base hospital staff for the care being provided.
The visit by the former president and his wife came four days before President Barack Obama was scheduled to appear at Fort Hood to meet with troops and mourning families.
Major Nidal Malik Hasan, an Army psychiatrist, accused of killing 13 and wounding 29, is hospitalized, under guard.
No cameras captured the Bushes’ visit because they told the base commander they did not want press coverage.
