Pew survey finds global warming belief ebbs

In a week with unseasonal snow still affecting several states, media coverage has been scant on a global warming survey that came out May 8 from the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press.  It finds belief in global warming is down six percentage points from early last year, notes Grumpy Editor.

The latest survey shows 71 percent of Americans say there is “solid evidence of higher global temperatures,” compared with 77 percent at the beginning of 2007.

While the three top presidential candidates are on the same page in citing global warming, the survey notes Republicans, Democrats and independents are divided on the topic.

Pew tallies 84 percent of Democrats, 75 percent of independents and 49 percent of Republicans say there is evidence of rising temperatures.

The survey also uncovers differences among age groups in believing the earth is warming mostly because of human activity, such as burning of fossil fuels.

Pew notes 54 percent of those under 30 years old believe that, compared with 37 percent of those 65 and older.

Along political lines in pointing to human activity as the main cause of global warming, 58 percent of Democrats express that view, compared with 50 percent of independents and 27 percent of Republicans.

The national survey of 1,502 adults was conducted April 23 to 27.
